Thursday's Thirteen: Squid facts

Image Detail
I’ve been watching shows about squids on Netflix so I decided to do--Thirteen facts about Squids.

 1. Squid have gills just like fish. They are often mistaken for octopus. While they two are similar they are different types of creatures.

2. They also move through the water tail first instead of head first.

3. A squid is able to swim by sucking water into the mantle cavity. Then they remove it through the siphon. This process continues all day long, even when they are sleeping.

4. The Colossal Squid is the largest invertebrate in the world. The smallest is the sepiolid squid. It is less than one inch long and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce.
5. The only predators that giant squid have are sperm whales.

6. More than $100,000 was paid in 2005 by an aquarium in Australia for a block of ice that held the preserved body of a giant squid in it.

7. Squids have the biggest eyes of any creature in the water. About the size of a baseball.
8. The Humboldt squid is very aggressive and will even attack sharks in the water. A few years ago they attacked some fishermen that had fallen out of the boat on the sea of Cortez (Baja California) and killed them.

 9. Most of the time squid are loners in the waters. However, there have been small groups of them identified. This can be due to many young being born in one location. When food sources are scarce or predators are a huge danger though they seem to group together in order to hunt easier and to stay alive. (Like the Humboldt which it the most dangerous of all squids.)

10. Every squid has three hearts and three gills that are positioned under their mantle.
11. Squids have a donut shaped brain.

12. The squids feeding tube goes right through the middle of the donut hole of the brain.

13. If they eat too big of a bite of food, they can suffer from brain damage. I thought this was so funny when I first heard it. “Now don’t eat so big a bite, dear. You don’t want to get brain damage.”

They also taste good when crumbed and deep fried:)
There's a colossal squid in Te Papa museum in Wellington. It's huge, and they televised the dissection not long ago - maybe a couple of years ago.

I think I saw that one on Netflex. It was a really interesting program.

Yes, they can be delicious if not previously frozen!Best calamari I ever ate was in Piraeus. i'd been caught in the rain--soaked through--and as the sun came out & fishing boats came in this pile of fresh fried squid came out. YUM! btw Mote Marine (Sarasota) has a preserved giant squid. M. S. Spencer

But would you want your daughter to marry one?

Janice Seagraves said...

Hi Sheila,

That's great. I hope your daughter enjoys the information.

Hi Savannah,

Yeah, and I've had them fried.

Hi M.S.,

Nothing is better than fresh fried sea food. My husband likes them dried. He calls them squid jerky.

Hi Jenny,

Now your being silly. :)

I've been seeing a lot about squids lately...they're very intelligent amazing creatures, apparently...and then I come in here and you, too, are discussing them!

A friend and I had a long discussion about them on New Year's Eve, actually. Hmmmmmm.....

Hi Lee,

They are very interesting. I think they also look a bit alien.

Fascinating post- thanks:)

I found you with the 'next blog' button, but I don't read most of the blogs I encounter, however I took particular interest in yours, and I read it as I think that you might also be interested in contributing to a discussion on my blog.

You may not be aware yet, but there is a new phenomenon sweeping parts of the web. It is very ambiguous and mysterious, but the messages that have been transmitted are very interesting and it is creating lots of excitement on the web and in certain circles of society.

It's ambiguity is where my blog comes in. It is a space where the questions and theories of this phenomenon can be discussed and scrutinised, and where those excited by this new viral campaign can try and solve the mystery of what it is, and whether it is really as relevant and interesting as it promises to be. It is still not known whether it is a political party, a philosophical idea or even a movie campaign!

Anyway I think that you would enjoy participating in the early discussions of this phenomenon.

Many thanks, and keep up the good blogging:)
